Carey Moon - Ceramics/Paintings
For my ceramic work I use porcelain and porcelain coloured slips. Sometimes the dishes are thrown on the wheel, and sometimes the clay is rolled out and draped over, or into a plaster mould to achieve the asymmetrical shape. The texture of the cloth that the clay is rolled out on helps with the decoration - perhaps to emulate the scaliness of the fish, a favourite motif. Current paintings and drawings are inspired by working outside in the landscape. I also do paintings based on still life. I like to work in a way that reflects the aims of painters like Matisse and Dufy, who enjoyed arranging colours on a flat surface. I am not concerned particularly with imitating reality - the picture has to work on its own terms. I like paintings that have a strong sense of place or atmosphere, or something mysterious about them.
